METAL IN PATAGONIEN UND FEUERLAND

Dies soll ein spezieller Bericht über Metal am südlichsten Ende der Welt sein! Es ist faszinierend wenn man dort durch die Weiten des Südens reist, und in jedem grösseren Ort langhaarige Metal Fans, und sogar Mitglieder von Bands trifft. Die genaue geographische Abgrenzung von Patagonien im Norden ist umstritten. im allgemeinen bezeichnet man alles was sich südlich der Pampa und des Flusses Rio Negro befindet als Patagonien. Hier gehen die weiten Gasländer der Pampa langsam in trockene Strauch Wüste über. Je weiter man nach Süden fährt, desto trockener, und weniger besiedelt wird es. Viele Ortschaften sind mehrere hundert Kilometer voneinander getrennt, und dazwischen ist nur riesige Weite ohne jede Besiedlung. Die Küste ist sehr reich an Tierleben, und in der Weite des Inlands verlaufen sich die wenigen Lebewesen. Im Westen türmen sich die Anden mit dichten Wäldern und Gletschern auf. Der Gebirgskamm bildet die Grenze zu Chile, auf deren Seite sich dichter Wald und steile kalte Fjorde befinden. Im Süden Chiles gibt es für Hunderte von Kilometern keinerlei Siedlungen, keinen Weg und Steg! Diese Gegend ist noch wilder als Nordkanada oder Alaska! Erst ganz im Süden, vor der Insel Feuerland gibt es auch in Chile wieder Flachland, und einige wenige Städte. Diese können nur über argentinische Strassen, oder per Schiff erreicht werden. Im extremen Süden wird es auch auf argentinischer Seite wieder grüner, und etwas dichter besiedelt. Die Grenzziehung an der südlichen Festlandspitze und auf der Insel Feuerland ist total verwirrend, und es gab schon mehr als einmal fast Krieg um ein paar Inseln, oder Berge! Nicht weit vom Festland liegen auch die Falkland Inseln, auf denen 2000 englische Siedler allen Ansprüchen von Argentinien trotzen. Nach dem Falklandkrieg 1982, bei dem die Argentinier die Inseln eroberten, und die Engländer sie in einem blutigen Krieg wieder vertrieben (ca. 600 Tote) sind die Beziehungen dort sehr frostig! Um von den wirklichen Problemen abzulenken, wird den Argentiniern von der Regierung schon als Kinder eingeimpft, dass sie diese Inseln zurückhaben müssen. So empfindet also jeder Argentinier Phantomschmerzen, wegen des fehlenden Teils des Landes. Beim Besuch dort konnte ich leider keine verborgene NWOBHM Band finden. Es gibt dort aber eine Rock Cover Band, die sich FIGHTING PIGS nennt, und die jetzt auch an eigenen Songs schreibt, die demnächst auf CD erscheien sollen! Früher gab es dort auch eine Band die sich CANDLE POWER nannte, und die härtere Stücke spielte, aber leider waren von ihnen keine Aufnahmen mehr aufzutreiben!
Noch weiter im Süden, in Antarktika konnte auch keine Heavy Metal Band gefunden werden. Vielleicht gab es ja auf einigen Forschungsstationen Leute die Metal gejammt haben! In der ehemaligen britischen Station "Faraday" (jetzt ukrainisch) fand ich wenigstens in der Bar einige LPs von DEEP PURPLE und BLACK SABBATH!! Also ist die Botschaft des Metal eindeutig auch schon auf dem 7. Kontinent erklungen!

In den Weiten Patagoniens herrschten die Indianer noch bis zum Jahre 1870. Die kleinen, aber sehr kriegerischen Stämme hielten die spanischen, und nach der Unabhängigkeit argentinischen, Soldaten und Siedler sehr lange auf. Deren Machtbereich ging für hunderte von Jahren nur kurz über die Stadtgrenze von Buenos Aires hinaus. In vielen Feldzügen holten sie sich blutige Nasen bei den Indianern. Diese wurden als "Malon" verunglimpft, die weisse Frauen rauben, und den Fortschritt aufhalten. Die Indianer wurden meisterliche Reiter auf den von den Spaniern eingeführten Pferden, und kämpften auch mit der ungewöhnlichen "Bola Bola" (3 mit Lederriemen verbundenen Kugeln die über dem Kopf geschwungen wurden, und sich um die Hinterbeine der Opfer wickelten). Erst im 19. Jahrhundert konnten die Argentinier langsam nach Süden vorstossen, der Rio Negro bildete aber noch lange die Grenze. Erst zur selben Zeit als die US Amerikaner ihren grossen Stoss nach Westen machten, und die Stämme dort unterwarfen und teils ausrotteten, machten die Argentinier ihren grossen Vorstoss nach Süden.

Dieser "Conquista del Desierto" (Eroberung der Wüste) genannte Krieg unter der Leitung des blutigen General Roca, führte zur vollen Ausrottung vieler Stämme. Trotz heldenhafter Gegenwehr konnten die an Zahl kleinen Stämme die Weissen nun nicht mehr aufhalten, und es wurden riesige Schafsfarmen eingerichtet, und Indianer weiter mit Kopfprämie gejagt. Heute ist der ganze extreme Süden "Indianerfrei". Es ist schon sehr traurig, dass dieses Kapitel ausserhalb Argentiniens völlig unbekannt ist, und es fast keine Bücher und Filme in Englisch oder Deutsch darüber gibt, während man mit US Cowboy und Indianer Schund totgeworfen wird!
Heute leben die Leute weit verstreut im Süden, und die Schafsfarmwirtschaft mit ihren berühmten Gauchos liegt darnieder. Viele "Estancias" sind geschlossen, und wie überall in Argentinien ist die ganze Wirtschaft kurz vor dem Kollaps.

Überall, wo eine grössere Siedlung ist findet man auch Metaleros in Argentinien. Wenn man ein bisschen sucht findet man auch in fast allen diesen Orten Bands. Heavy Metal in all seinen Formen ist dort sehr angesagt. Leider existieren viele dieser Bands nicht lange. In diesen abgelegenen Städten gibt es keine Universitäten und höhere Schulen, also gehen die jungen Leute dafür in den Norden. So haben also die meisten Bands sehr junge Mitglieder, und wenn sie 18 werden ist meist schon wieder Schluss, weil ein Teil nach Norden geht, und der andere sich um Familie kümmert.
Ich schreibe in diesem Bericht über alle Bands und Stilrichtungen, die irgendwann einmal etwas aufgenommen haben. Dieser Bericht ist für reine Sammler sicher nicht so interessant, da es nur einige wenige offizielle CDs von dort gibt, und nur eine Vinyl LP von FACTOR RH. Der Rest ist auf Kassetten erschienen, wovon viele auch nur unoffizielle Rehearsal und Live Aufnahmen sind, die natürlich noch nicht einmal ein Cover haben! Dieser Bericht soll eigentlich mehr die Bands dort untereinander bekannt machen, da sie oft nicht einmal wissen was im nächsten Ort, der ein paar hundert Kilometer enfernt ist, vor sich geht! Ich hoffe aber auch ein paar interessierte Deutsche Leser zu finden, die nicht gleich die Nase rümpfen, weil es dort kein superseltenes Vinyl zu holen gibt, sondern die sich daran erfreuen können etwas über die Metal Szene am Ende der Welt zu erfahren! Ich fange im Norden an, und gehe dann Stadt für Stadt nach Süden vor! Bitte schaut auch in die englische (und später spanische) Version für weitere Fotos und Cover!

DIE STÄDTE PATAGONIENS UND IHRE BANDS

TRELEW / PUERTO MADRYN / RAWSON
In der Provinz Chubut stösst man als erstes auf diese 3 grösseren Städte, die alle ziemlich dicht beieinander liegen. Sie liegen im schönen Tal des Chubut Flusses, an dem sich sehr viele Siedler aus Wales niedergelassen haben. An der Küste ist die weltberühmte Halbinsel Valdez, an deren Ufern das Tierleben tobt, und in deren Bucht man Wale streicheln kann! Fast jeder hat schon einmal im Fernsehen die Bilder gesehen, wenn sich Killerwale Robben vom Ufer holen, das gibt es nur in Valdez! In den Städten leben deshalb sehr viele Leute vom Tourismus.
Metallisches gibt es aus den Gefilden auch viel zu berichten! Aus der Stadt Puerto Madryn kommen die Jungs von FACTOR RH die es als einzige Patagonier bisher schafften ein richtig offizielles Album zu machen, und das auch noch in Vinyl! Sie waren auch sehr aktiv und haben sich mehrmals auf den weiten Weg nach Buenos Aires gemacht um dort zu spielen! Näheres zur Band kann man in der Hauptabteilung lesen! Der Main Man von FACTOR RH, Gitarrist Daniel Rodriguez macht aber heute noch weiter aktiv Musik, mit der modernen Band CRUDO und als Solist mit Hard Rock Tönen! Alle anderen Bands aus der Gegend haben es nicht aus dem Untergrund herausgeschafft. Die Szene dort scheint aber sehr aktiv zu sein, speziell die fanatischen True Metal Fans! Vor allem der Sänger von VOLCANIKA, Fabian "Vikingo" Colueque ist eine wichtige Persönlichkeit dort. Mit seiner Band spielte er auch schon in Buenos Aires, und True Metal Bands wie PUNISHER kamen nach Chubut um dort zu spielen. Er hat auch ein eigenes Metal Radio Programm, dass sich "Perros de la lluvia" (Hunde des Regens) nennt! Hier nun die einzelnen Bands:

SEQUEDAL sind eine True Metal Band aus Rawson. Sie spielen schnellen Power Metal, und mir liegen 2 Demos vor die live aufgenommen wurden. Deshalb ist die Qualität natürlich nicht sehr gut. Bei dem ersten Demo ist die live Qualität teils sehr schlecht, aber beim zweiten schon erheblich besser! Auf diesem ist dann auch eine Cover Version von MANOWAR`s "Hail and kill" mit Death grunts in Chor, was sich sogar ganz witzig anhört!

VOLCANIKA ist die Band des True Metal warriors Fabian "Vikingo" Colueque! Er hat kein Wikingerblut, sondern ist einer der wenigen Abkömmlinge der letzten Indianer Patagoniens! Auch die anderen Mitglieder der Band sollen noch Indianerblut haben. Ihr Demo "Defendiendo nuestra identidad" von 1997 ist auch live aufgenommen, und enthält einfachen rauhen Metal mit anklagenden Texten. In den letzten Jahren ist die Band nicht sehr aktiv, da Fabian viele andere Probleme hat, und es schwer ist dort ein festes Line up zu halten.

LACRO hat eine lange Demo CD mit 12 Tracks unter dem Namen "Facon grande" herausgebracht, die guten Power Metal mit hohen Schreien enthält. Leider ist die Aufnahmequalität auch nicht sehr gut, und wohl im Proberaum gemacht worden. Wenn die Jungs die Möglichkeit gehabt hätten unter besseren umständen aufzunehmen wäre es ein richtig gutes Album geworden! Ein Cover scheint es auch nicht zu geben.

CRUDO ist die neue Band des FACTOR RH Gitarristen Daniel Rodriguez, zusammen mit seinem Bruder Matias. Sie spielen recht modernen Metal, der aber noch reichlich traditionelle Wurzeln hat. Dank der Erfahrung, und den Beziehungen von Daniel haben sie ihre CD als Eigenpressung herausgebracht. Dies ist, neben der REO CD, die einzige offiziell hergestellte CD die mir dort im Süden bekannt ist. Sie hat auch ein schönes Cover, ist aber wie gesagt nur für tolerante Leute!

DANIEL RODRIGUEZ der Gitarrist von FACTOR RH hat mindestens 2 CDs als Solist herausgebracht: "Guitarista del sur" und "Hombre del sur". Auf der ersteren sind gitarrenorientierte Hard Rock Stücke, und manchmal lässt er auch die Post abgehen. Auf der zweiten wird es folkloristisch und akustisch. Im Jahre 2001 erschien noch das album "Mi Homenaje", welche vor allem Cover Stücke bekannter Rock und Hard Rock Legenden enthält., und dazu gibt es ein Stück von FACTOR RH digital, und neu eingespielt! Er wird sicher nur lokale Bekanntheit haben, steckt aber als Gitarrenspieler viele andere, bekanntere Leute, locker in die Tasche! Für reine Metal Fans sind diese CDs sicher nichts.

DISTORIUM sind eine Death Metal Band aus Chubut. Sie haben eine Demo CD Namens "Mortificando al moribundo" herausgebracht. Diese enthält nicht sehr aufregendes Gegrunze, und auch keine interessante Gitarrenarbeit.

Es gibt noch Aufnahmen von den Bands TEMPLARIO, die guten normalen Metal spielen, und von P.U.S. von denen ich ein super Instrumental Metal Stück habe! MORTUORIO haben eine 6 Track Aufnahme mit unaufregendem Death Metal. Es soll auch noch ein Demo von der Band ATEOS geben, das ich bisher noch nicht besorgen konnte! Leider ist mir auch noch keine Nummer des lokalen Fanzines "Puno de hierro" untergekommen!

COMODORE RIVADAVIA
Diese Stadt ist kein Touristenzentrum, sondern die Hauptstadt des argentinischen Öls! In alle Himmelsrichtungen ziehen sich Ölleitungen, und stehen Pumpen! Kein anregender Ort zum verweilen, auch wenn die Küste schön ist! Auch hier gibt es natürlich Metal Bands! Seit langer Zeit gibt es auch das Metal Radioprogramm "El Resplandor", welches von Alejandro Bustamante geleitet wird. Er hat auch die Compilation "Detras del chenque la Patagonia tragica" herausgebracht, welche einige sehr extreme Bands enthielt. Es gab ausser den unten erwähnten Bands mit CD Release aber noch einige weitere traditionelle Bands in der Stadt. CEGADOR nahmen 1991 zwei super traditionelle Metal Songs auf, und DARKEST 1993 zwei guter Power Nummern, bevor sie sich beide aufgelöst haben.

OXIDO sind eine junge Band, die sich dem teutonischen Metal verschrieben haben, was in Süden von Argentinien selten ist! Sie haben sich 1997 gegründet, und schon im nächsten Jahr brachten sie ein 8 Track Demo mit schönem Cover heraus. Sie haben Probleme mit ihrem Line Up, und neue Leute zu finden, da kaum jemand diesen Sound, der mit Keyboards untermalt ist, spielen will!

MORGUE ist eine heftige Death Metal Band, die 1998 die Demo CD "Bringer of the light" herausbrachten. Diese ist nur ewas für Liebhaber, die unbedingt auch noch Gegrunze vom Ende der Welt haben müssen, wo es sich doch überall auf der Welt gleich anhört!

REO spielen einen sehr schwer zu beschreibenden Stil! Sie sind wohl noch sehr jung, und auf der im Jahre 2000 erschienen CD "Promesas" mischen sie moderne Einflüsse, traditionellen Metal mit guten Gitarreneinsätzen, und anderes zusammen. Dies ist also nichts für Leute die es sehr konservativ mögen! Die CD ist eine echte Eigenpressung. Im Jahre 2001 steuerten sie einen Song zum V8 Tribute "No esta muerto quien pelea" bei.

CALETA OLIVIA
Eine weitere Ölstadt ist Caleta Olivia! Sie liegt schon in der südlichsten patagonischen Provinz Santa Cruz. Aber die nächste Stadt in der heimischen Provinz mit Metal Bands ist hunderte von Kilometern entfernt. So sind die Verbindungen nach Comocore Rivadavia etwas günstiger. In der Provinz Hauptstadt Santa Cruz scheint es keine Metal Bands zu geben! Die einzige Attraktion von Caleta Olivia ist ein riesiges Denkmal eines Ölarbeiters im russischen Monumentalstil! Aber es gibt einige gute Metal Bands hier! Auch gibt es hier das südlichste Fanzine der Welt, das sich "El Hacha" nennt, und das sogar eine Compilation Kassette herausgebracht hat (mit Bands aus dem ganzen Land). Hierauf ist auch ein Song von den lokalen DEKREPITOS (die primitiven Thrash mit schlechter Stimme spielen), und natürlich ESCAPE LIBRE.
Auf der Compilation "La casa la musica `98" auf der hauptsächlich Bands aus Rio Gallegos sind, befinden sich auch 3 Bands aus Caleta Olivia. Neben den bekannten ESCAPE LIBRE sind darauf NECRODAMUS, die wilden aber ganz anständigen Death Metal spielen, und AR-C-NAL, die sehr guten normalen bis thrashigen Metal spielen.

ESCAPE LIBRE sind die Lokal Matadoren. Sie spielen guten Power Metal, und haben auf ihrer Demo CD ein richtig gutes Indianercover. Die Stimme ist vielleicht ein wenig monoton, aber musikalisch sind sie echt gut! Natürlich ist die Aufnahme nicht besonders, aber die Jungs haben Potential. Ob sie aber jemals die Chance haben werden ihre Musik professioneller aufzunehmen ist fraglich!

RIO GALLEGOS
Dies ist die wichtigste Stadt in der Provinz Santa Cruz, und auch nicht besonders schön. Hier treffen sich alle Strassen, da es der südlichste Punkt des argentinischen Festlands ist, und jeder der hier reist muss hindurch. Die Magellan Strasse ist nicht weit, aber landschaftlich reizvoll ist nicht einmal die Küste! Aber von hier aus kommt man in das Gebirge, wo man eine der schönsten Szenerien von Bergen und Gletschern weltweit bestaunen kann! In der Stadt gab es zu allen Zeiten Metal Bands, die aber meist nicht lange existierten! Einige grosse nationale Bands hat es im Laufe der Zeit auch so weit in den Süden verschlgen (V8; HORCAS; VIBRION; RATA BLANCA; EL DRAGON ALMAFUERTE, und andere) Sogar das "Metal Rock" Festival 1996 machte einen Abstecher nach dort! Es sind leider nicht viele Demos in Rio Gallegos erschienen, aber dafür wurden 2 sehr gute Compilation Tapes herausgebracht:
1. "La Casa De La Musica `98, Heavy Metal, 1. Compilado De Santa Cruz" ist ein hervorragender Sampler, der auf offizieller Kassette erschien. Hierauf befinden sich auch 2 Bands aus Caleta Olivia, die ich dort erwähnt habe. Es ist aber noch eine besonders "exotische" Band darunter. OSIRIS spielten sehr guten melodischen Power Metal mit Keyboards, und waren aus Rio Turbio, einem Bergarbeiter Städtchen an der chilenischen Grenze. Dieser kleine Ort so abgelegen muss wohl, was Metal betrifft, eines der verschlafensten Nester weltweit sein! Aus Rio Gallegos sind darauf vertreten: SACRILEGIO, mit gutem KREATOR mässigem Stil, und sogar englischen Lyrics! NOSTRADAMUS spielten normalen Thrash mit dunkler Stimme, der ganz o.k. ist, und KATHARSIS und HEBRON spielten guten normalen Metal. PURGATORY erwähne ich noch extra.
2. "Fuera de Extincion" ist ein Sampler mit vielen verschieden Bands und Stilen, der als offizielle CD erschienen ist! Hierauf finden wir KATALEPSIA, die einen ganz seltsamen Mix aus Metal, Punk und symphonischen Klängen fabrizierten! OZZMOSIS sind eine ganz gute Death Metal Band, die ihre Gitaren gut einzusetzten wissen. Dann haben wir weitere offiziellen Aufnahmen von PURGATORIO, und der Rest ist Punk, wovon ANTIHEROES und R.E.H. ordentlich losbrettern!
Es gab noch weitere Bands wie STRATOS; ASTILLEROS und SNIF, von denen ich nichts besorgen konnte, und auch eine neue klassische Metal Band namens OREJANO existiert, aber ohne Aufnahmen.Es gab einmal ein Death Metal Fanzine das sich "Sarcasmo" nannte, und eine Radiosendung "Fuera de Control". Es gibt noch viele Punk Bands, unter anderem eine reine Mädchenband die sich HARPIAS nennt!

PURGATORIO war die wohl wichtigste Band in der Metal Szene der Stadt. Sie wurden 1995 gegründet, und der Drummer und der Bassist spielten vorher schon in KATALEPSIA. Von deren wirrem Stil ist aber in der Band nichts mehr zu merken, und sie spielen total linientreu im Stil von ALMAFUERTE. Selbst die Stimme von Sänger und Gitarrist Carlos Aravena erinnert an Iorio! Sie hatten jeweils Songs auf den beiden lokalen Samplern, aber wohl kein eigenes Demo. Sie lösten sich 2000 auf, und der Drummer ging zu SCARNIO.

SCARNIO ist die jüngste Band in der Stadt, sie gründeten sich im Jahre 2000. Der Drummer kam von PURGATORIO und sie haben im selben Jahr schon ein offizielles Demo gemacht. Dieses enthält zwei gut aufgenommene Songs und 2 Live Songs die schlecht recorded sind. Der Stil ist ziemlich einfacher und wilder Thrash mit Death Metal mässiger Stimme. Teils kommen die Gitarren gut zum Einsatz. Schon im Gründungsjahr können sie auch nach Chile herüber, und spielen als Vorgruppe von DORSO in Punta Arenas.

RIO GRANDE
ist die grösste Stadt auf der Insel Feuerland. Sie liegt im flachen Nordteil, und ist berüchtigt für die starken Winde, die das ganze Jahr durch den Ort peitschen! Es ist auch nicht sehr schön im Ort, und die Massen von Touristen ziehen schnell hindurch auf ihrem Weg an`s "Ende der Welt" in Ushuaia! Rio Grande ist aber eindeutig die Metal Haupstadt von Feuerland, da in der anderen Stadt des Eilandes nix los ist! Es gab im Laufe der Zeit viele Metal Bands in der Stadt, die aber alle aus den bekannten Gründen nicht lange existiert haben. Ein Zentrum der Szene ist das Radioprogramm "Imperio", das schon seit über 10 Jahren existiert. Die Macher Claudio Oyarzun und Mario Aguilar sorgten auch für die Herausgabe der lokalen Sampler, und unterstützen die Bands wo es nur geht!
Die erste lokale richtige Metal Band war im Jahre 1988 LA SABIA DESTRUCCION, die bis 1990 existierten. Anfang der 90er fing dann Fabian Ingressia an seine Soloalben herauszubringen, und die sehr gute Band LOS MONJES existierte! Ende der 90er war CORROSIVA sehr aktiv, die sogar eine Eigenpressung herausgebracht haben! Die 2 erschienen Sampler bieten einen sehr guten Querschnitt durch die lokale Metal Szene:
1. "Antologia Del Rock En Rio Grande" wurde von den Radio "Imperio" Leuten herausgegeben, und enthält auch einige sehr alte Aufnahmen, wie zum Beispiel von der allerersten Metal Band LA SABIA DESTRUCCION, die guten einfachen hymnischen Metal spielten. Dann befinden sich darauf die einzigen 2 veröffentlichten Songs von LOS MONJES, welche Spitzen Metal mit guter Gitarre spielten! Gut sind auch THANATOS, welche sehr gitarrenbetonten Metal spielen, der sehr zu gefallen weiss. CORROSIVA haben einen weiteren Song hier. Die anderen Metal Bands IRIS; TRAUMMA und NEOCRACIA sind alle nicht sehr gut, und der Rest ist Punk oder Rock.
2. "Lo Ultimo De Lo Ultimo" ist ein Sampler in 2 Teilen, und einem Live Video!! Die Aufnahmen sind aus neuerer Zeit, und deshalb moderner und agressiver! Sie wurden im Jahr 2000 bei 2 Festivals aufgenommen, die auch vom "Imperio" Radio organisiert wurden. Durch den Live Sound ist die Qualität schon einmal nicht sehr besonders, aber auch die Bands selbst sind meist nicht so gut! Die bekannteren CORROSIVA stechen schon heraus! Gut sind auch INDIGNACION und TRANCE, und ganz o.k. sind ARION (der Sänger ist leider ziemlich schlecht) und A.D.H.E.R. Mit dem Rest kan ich leider gar nichts anfangen!
Einige grosse nationale Bands verschlug es auch bis Feuerland! 1995 kamen HERMETICA und LOGOS und 1998 MALON. Seitdem hat sich keine bekannte Band mehr auf die Insel getraut. Es gibt jetzt auch eine ganz neue junge Band die dem traditionellen Sound frönt, R.G. genannt! Eine extrem moderne Band namens DESKAGA hat 2001 auch noch eine CD herausgebracht.

LOS MONJES waren die ersten richtig aktiven Metaller der Stadt. Sie gründeten sich Ende der 80er Jahre. Anfang der 90er gewannen sie einen Musik Wettbewerb in Feuerland, und durfen daraufhin bis nach Barilaoche eisen und spielen (Berggegend viel weiter im Norden, die "Schweiz" Argentiniens). 1995 eröffneten sie die Show von HERMETICA. Als 1994 der Solist CHUGO in der stadt spielte eröffneten sie auch für ihn, und er

FABIAN INGRASSIA scheint ein einsamer Kämpfer für den Metal am Ende der Welt zu sein! Es ist schon unglaublich wie er dort unermüdlich bisher 4 CDs in Eigenregie herausgebracht hat! Er war in den 80ern Mitglied bei den ersten Metal Band der Stadt LA SABIA DESTRUCCION! Nach deren Auflösung hat es etliche Jahre gedauert bis Fabian wieder Leute um sich geschart hat und 1998 veröffentlichte er seine erste CD "Desde Mi Pequenez" unter seinem eigenen Namen. Der Stil ist ziemlich einfach gestrickter Metal, mit etwas monotoner Stimme. 1999 folgte "Palabras De Invierno", 2000 "Construyendo" und 2001 "Firme En El Camino". Alles in allem eine beachtliche Leistung! Es lässt sich auch eine stetige Verbesserung feststellen, obwohl er nicht die Klasse von bekannteren Musikern erreicht!
Aber was solls, er hält da unten eisern die Stellung, und auf den Idealismus kommt es an! Wo anders zu spielen ist natürlich ein Problem, aber er war schon bis in Entre Rios, was nördlich von Buenos Aires ist! Diese ganzen CDs sind natürlich nur gebrannte Demos, aber schön professionell aufgemacht, und die dritte hat sogar ein dickes gedrucktes Booklet. Kontakt: ingrassia@netcombbs.com.ar

CORROSIVA wurden 1996 gegründet. Einige Mitglieder waren vorher in den Bands THANATOS (existierten von 1994 bis 1996) und CADENA PERPETUA Nachdem einige von den Jungs nach dem Norden gezogen sind, war es das Ende für die Band. Sie spielten einen Mix aus verschiedenen Stilen, hauptsächlich traditionellen Metal, teils moderneren Sound, und einige folkloristische Parts. Es befindet sich auch ein Video Clip darauf, und sie singen sogar ein paar Sätze in der Sprache der ausgestorbenen Feuerland Indianer. Von der CD wurden nur 150 Stück hergestellt. Sie haben auch eine offizielle Live Videokassette gemacht.

R.G. (für Rio Grande) sind die jüngste echt Metal Hoffnung in der Stadt, nachdem fast alle anderen jungen Bands extrem modernes Zeug, oder Punk spielen. Der Gitarrist und der Drummer sind gerade mal 16 Jahre alt, und der 2. Gitarrist ist schon 17. Die anderen sind mit ihren 20 und 21 Jahren schon richtig alt! Sie haben im Proberaum 4 Songs aufgenommen, und das hört sich schon mal sehr gut an! Völlig ungewöhnlich für diese Ecke arbeiten sie mit Keyboards und klingen sehr atmosphärisch, aber mit viel Gitarre! Wunderbar ist, dass sie dabei nicht wie die meisten auf BLIND GUARDIAN oder andere schielen, sondern ihren eigenen Weg gehen! Natürlich haben sie dort unten und in dem Alter nicht die Möglichkeiten und Erfahrung für eine Profi Aufnahme, aber die Songs lassen sehr viel Potential erahnen!! Weiter so Jungs, oder wie man in Argentinien sagen würde "Aguante R.G.!!"

USHUAIA
ist die südlichste Stadt der Welt (obwohl Chilenen da wiedersprechen werden, denn ihr Puerto Williams ist südlicher, aber keine richtige Stadt). Ushuaia liegt wunderschön gelegen im südliche Teil von Feuerland, umringt von spitzen Bergen und Gletschern, und davor der schöne Beagle Kanal! Die Stadt lebt vom Militär und den immer zahlreicher werdenden Touristen. Ganze Heerscharen ziehen dorthin, holen sich ihre Souvenir Shirts mit dicker roter Aufschrift "Ich überlebte das Ende der Welt"....oder so ähnlich, und ziehen wieder von dannen! Es ist bei weitem kein Abenteuer dorthin zu reisen, da alle Verkehrswege gut ausgebaut sind!
In diesem Städtle nun gibt es auch einige wenige Metal Bands! Es war ganz schön schwierig sie in ihren Verstecken aufzustöbern! Die ersten Jungs die sich zusammentaten, nannten sich 1988 JELFAX, und ändern ihn 1990 in SELK`NAM, nach dem Namen der Feuerlandindianer. Sie schaffen es sogar bis nach Rio Gallegos und Comodore Rivadavia zu kommen um dort live zu spielen. Sie spielen normalen Metal und bestehen bis 1995. Ihr Sänger Jorge Montenegro hat seit 1994 die Metal Radiosendung "Desde la torre". Auch einige bekannte Truppen verirrten sich im Laufe der Zeit ans Ende der Welt.
1994 kamen HERMETICA und spielten vor 250 Leuten. Bei den riesigen Transportkosten sind alle Gastspiele von vorn herein ein Zuschussgeschätft, denn mehr als ein paar Hundert Mann kann in der kleinen Stadt keiner mobilisieren! 1997 kommen trotzdem MALON, und 1990 RATA BLANCA. Auch PAPPO war mit seiner Bluesband mehrmals dort. Zur Zeit ist die Metal Szene in Tiefschlaf, da LEGION Line Up seit Jahren Probleme hat, und LUZ ROJA nicht unbedingt als Metal gezählt werden kann! Im Ort gibt es auch mehrere sehr talentierte Gitarristen, die aber in keiner Band spielen. Der jüngere von 2 Brüdern (16 Jahre alt), die beide sehr gut sind, wird "Jimito" (kleiner Jimmy) genannt! In den letzten Jahren fiel die Metal Szene weiter in`s Koma! Es gibt nur eine neue Band die weiter im Untergrund herumkrebst, sie heissen PRESAGIO, und werden hoffentlich schaffen ein Demo aufzunehmen!

HAMESTAGAN bestanden seit 1991 und nannten sich erst NECROMANTICAL. Um 1996 nahmen sie ein derbes Grindcore / Death Demo, genannt "Patagonia: Bajo La Mira" auf. Diese Kassette ist das einzige offizielle Stück Metal welches in Ushuaia herausgegeben wird! Damit ist es definitiv der südlichste Metal Release auf der Welt! Ihr Stil war zwar brutal, aber doch recht abwechslungsreich! Sie bestanden bis 1997.

LEGION ist eine junge Band, die 1995 gegründet wurde. Gitarrist Horacio steigt bald aus und gründet LUZ ROJA, da er mehr den Blues Rock liebt. So müssen sie sich einen neuen Gitarristen besorgen, und bis heute habe sie schon den dritten. Den Namen haben sie vom Spielfilm "La Profecia". Erst 1998 können sie ihr erstes Konzert absolvieren. Um für die LOS FABULOSUS CADILLACS zu eröffnen gab es einen Wettbewerb und als sie den zweiten Platz machen dürfen sie vor 800 Leuten spielen. In den letzen Jahren gab es immer Probleme einen Sänger zu finden. Ich hoffe aber das es mit ihnen weitergeht, da sie echt guten Power Metal spielen!

LUZ ROJA sind mehr eine Blues Hard Rock Band, aber zur Zeit die einzigen die Live harte Klänge am Ende der Welt erklingen lassen! Sie bestehen seit 1995, nachdem Gitarrist Horacio bei LEGION ausstieg. Er übernimmt auch den Gesang. Ihr anderer Gitarrist war aus Buenos Aires und hat dort vorher in der Hardcore Band MAL MOMENTO gespielt. Er ist aber inzwischen wieder dorthin zurück und Hare Krischna geworden!

PUNTA ARENAS
ist eine etwas andere Welt! Sie liegt im chilenischen Patagonien, direkt an der Magellan Strasse und ist umringt von Bergen. Zu den spektakulären Bergen im Nationalpark "Torres del Paine" ist es nicht weit. Die Stadt selbst ist recht gross, und das grösste Zentrum im südlichen Patagonien und Feuerland. Es ist vom Rest von Chile geographisch völlig getrennt, da der schmale Verbindungsstreifen nach Norden nur aus Wildniss besteht, mit schroffen Fjorden und Gletschern. Wer in seinem Heimatland nach Norden will muss fliegen, 4 Tage mit dem Schiff fahren, oder über Argentinien. Chile war im allgemeinen etwas ärmer als Argentinien, und das Verhältniss ist nicht besonders, und es bestehen auch teils starke Vorurteile geeneinander. Die ganze Ecke dort unten wimmelt von Militär, und der Grenzverlauf ist immer noch umstritten. Um ein paar Eiskappen und 3 kleine Inseln kam es schon 2 mal fast zum Krieg, und nur der "Himmlische Vater" konnte sie bisher bremsen.
Es gab auch in Punta Arenas immer einige Leute die dem Metal frönten! Es gibt auch in der Musik Unterschiede zu Argentinien, denn hier singen fast alle Englisch, und die brutaleren Stilrichtungen herrschen vor! Dies ist in Punta Arenas nicht anders. Hier gibt es aber das selbe Problem, wie in argentinisch Patagonien: die jungen Leute müssen zur höheren Schule in den Norden, und so bestehen die meisten Bands nur kurz! Viele kommen aber im Sommer wieder in die alte Heimat, und dann wird kreuz und quer mit Mitgliedern aller möglichen Bands gejammt! Es gibt nicht sehr viele Auftrittsmöglichkeiten für Metal Bands, da die Szene so klein ist, und maximal 200 Leute kommen. Die Punk Szene ist grösser, und so hängt man sich Live öfter bei einem Punk Konzert ran, um mehr Leute zu erreichen!
Die eigene Szene fing erst Ende der 80er Jahre an, als um 1989 herum PURGATORY anfing Death Metal zu spielen. Diese Jungs lösen sich aber bald auf, und 1991 gründen sich die Bands OVERTHROW und INFIDEL, die auch Death Metal spielen. Aber auch diese Bands brechen bald auseinander. Musiker aus beiden Bands tun sich 1993 zusammen und gründen DEHUMANIZE, die es 1994 schaffen die ersten einheimischen Songs zu recorden. Dieses ist recht holpriger Death Metal. Kurz dannach fällt aber auch diese Band auseinander, und 2 Leute gründen SCREEN HAGEN. 1997 gründen sich HIELO NEGRO, die einen für Chile völlig untypischen Stil spielen, nämlich Rock`n Roll Metal im Stil von den HELLACOPTERS! Vor allem in Punta Arenas haben sie dafür aber zu wenig Publikum, so zieht fast die ganze Band nach Santiago. Dort haben sie in der Szene wohl einigen Erfolg. Im Jahre 2000 ist allerhand los in Punta Arenas, da eine der grössten chilenischen Metal Bands kommt, nämlich DORSO, und die neue Band VASTAGO darf eröffnen. In einer Art "Kulturaustausch" kommen auch die Argentinier SCARNIO aus Rio Gallegos dazu (und DORSO spielen dafür auch dort). Die Szene sieht im Moment recht traurig aus, da VASTAGO auch komplett nach Norden gezogen sind, und SCREEN HAGEN Line Up Probleme haben. Nur bei FROZEN EMPIRE scheint es weiter zu gehen. Radiosendungen gab es nur zeitweise, so gab es um 1997 "Sinfonia Extremo", welches von einem HIELO NEGRO Mitglied gemacht wurde.

SCREEN HAGEN sind eine sehr sehr talentierte Band, um den Gitarristen Chino. Sie existieren seit 1995, als 2 Leute von DEHUMANIZE andere Musik machen wollten. Statt Death Metal spielen sie hochklassigen progressiven Metal mit super Gitarrenarbeit. Sie spielen aber meist nur für sich, und selten Live. Es sind auch Perektionisten die lange an ihren Songs herumfeilen, was man der Qualität auch anmerkt. Sie haben aber auch oft Line Up Probleme, so haben sie schon lange keinen Sänger mehr. Der andere Gitarrist Pepo war auch zeitweise in Santiago und spielte bei TORTURER. Ich hoffe sie finden bald einen guten Sänger und nehmen ihre super instrumental Songs einmal richtig mit Gesang auf! Chino und sein Bassist haben auch noch eine Thrash Metal Band, namens FATUM, zusammen mit dem Gitarristen von TORTURER (dieser ist auch aus Punta Arenas und kommt im Sommer in die Heimat).

FROZEN EMPIRE ist die Band von Bassist Ricardo Palmer. Er zog nach Santiago, und spielte dort bei BLÖDEN WEDD, einer guten traditionellen Metal Band, die schon 2 CDs gemacht hat. Im Jahre 2000 zog es ihn aber wieder in die Heimat, und er gründete seine eigene lokale True Metal Band! Der Gitarrist und der Drummer spielten vorher in einer Cover Band.
Es sind alles talentierte Burschen, und sie wollten eigentlich noch im Jahre 2001 eine CD aufnehmen (ob etwas daraus geworden ist kann ich nicht sagen, da meine Infos von Anfang 2001 stammen) Sie spielen guten traditionellen Metal mit leichten teutonischen Einflüssen. Ricardo und sein Gitarrist spielen auch noch mit einer Drummerin und Keyboarderin in der Band MANTIZA, die mehr im Stil von THE CURE spielen!

VASTAGO ist die Death Metal Band des Pärchens Manolo (Gitarre) und Elisabeth (Vocal). Dies ist echt ungewöhnlich, da mir in ganz Chile keine Band mit einer Sängerin bekannt ist! Ausgerechnet im tiefsten Süden hat es ein Mädel an`s Mikrofon geschafft! Sie gründeten die Band im Jahr 2000, und spielen qualitativ sehrt hochwertigen Death Metal! Es kommt viel Gitarre zum Einsatz, und Elisabeths Stimme ist auch als feminin zu erkennen (bei vielen Death Metal Bands hört man ja keinen Unterschied ob Männlein oder Weiblein am Mikro!). Sie sind auch in der Szene sehr aktiv und arbeiten am "Hellhound" Fanzine mit. Sie sind aber 2001 nach Norden gezogen und wollten eine CD aufnehmen.

METAL IN PATAGONIA AND FIRELAND (TIERRA DEL FUEGO)

This is a special report about Metal at the southern end of the world. It is very fascinating when you travel at this southernmost part of the world and find Metal fans and even band members at the remotest settlements. I dedicate this report to this Metaleros Patagonicos and Metaleros Fueginos!

The exact geogrophical border of Patagonia in the north is contoversial. Normally the southern end of the Pampa and the Rio Negro is the beginning of Patagonia. Here the wide fertile grass land of the Pampa slowly transform into endless shrub desert. The further south you travel, the remoter it becomes, and settlements are hundreds of miles away from each other, and inbetween is only the desert! The coastal fauna is very rich, but in the wide interior the wildlife is hard to find. In the West the giant Andean mountains pile up, which are covered by wood and glaciers. The divide of the mountain range is the border between Chile and Argentina. At the Chilean side there is thick forest and steep cold fjords. In the very South of Chile, there are no settlements, no paths, and no human sign for hundreds of miles. This area of the world is wilder than Northern Canada or Alaska! Only in the extreme South, close to the island of Tierra del Fuego (Fireland) there is flat land again in Chile, but this part the Chileans can reach only by ship or through roads in Argentina. This area is again green on both sides of the border. But the borderline is very confusing, and there was a threat of war about some useless islands or mountain tops, more than one time. Not far away from the mainland are the Falkland Islands, with 2000 British settlers, which resist all the Argentine claims. After the Falkland war in 1982, when the Argentines conquered the island, and the English forces drove them back in a bloody war (around 600 killed!), the relations are very frosty! To distract the poor Argentine people from the real problems in the country, they are indoctrinated from childhood with the propaganda, that they have to have back "their" islands. So every patriotic Argentine has this "phantom limb pains", that he is missing something if he has not back this islands! My Argentine friends: I love you very much, but make your mind clear and independent! If you want to have back the borders of 1832, you have to stay in Buenos Aires, and give all the rest back to the Indians! If you kick out your typical Latin American corrupt government, there will be a chance to incorporate these islands! But as long, as the islanders can choose to have an better European, democratic government, you won`t get them!
When I visited these Islands my hope was destroyed, that I might find a hidden NWOBHM band (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, a term for the Metal bands like IRON MAIDEN in the beginning of the 80s) But there exist a Rock cover band called FIGHTING PIGS, which writes now own songs, and want to release this on CD. Some years ago existed also a band called CANDLE POWER, which suppose to have played a bit harder music! Even further South, in the Antarctic I also could not find a Metal band! May be there were some scientists at the stations jamming in a band!? But at the old British scientific station "Faraday" (now Ukrainian) I at least found some old vinyl records from DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH in the bar! This is the proof, that even on the 7th continent, the word of Metal is spread!

In the vastness of Patagonia ruled the Indian tribes till around 1870. The small, but martial tribes resisted first the Spaniards and after the independence, the Argentines, for a long time. The power of the white people reached for hundreds of years only a short distance from Buenos Aires. In many campaigns they got beaten by the Indians. They called them "Malon", because they were suppose to steal white woman and stop the progress. The Indians became very skilled horseman, after the Spaniards brought the horse to America, and they fought with the special "Boleadora" (3 balls connected by leather strings, which were swung over the head, thrown, and tied themself around the legs of the victims). Only in the 19th century the Argentines could push further to the South, but the Rio Negro was still for a long time the border. Only at the same time as the US Americans started their big Indian wars, and submissed and exterminated the tribes in the west, the Argentines started their big push to the South. This so called "Conquista del desierto" (Conquest of the desert) was led by the bloody General Roca, and ended in the extinction of most of the tribes in the south! Despite the heroic resistance of the small tribes, they could not stop the whites anymore, and giant sheep farms were founded. Those incredible rich sheep barons payed bountys for dead Indians (and the familys of this assassins are still center of the financial and cultural life in Argentina).
Today all 4 tribes of the far south are extinct! It is very sad, that this history is absolutely unknown outside Argentina. There exist no books or movies in English or German about this history, only millions of cowboy and indians crap from the US. Today the people live very scattered in the South, and the sheep business with the famous Gauchos is pretty much down economicly. Many "Estancias" are closed, and like all over Argentina, the whole economy is collapsing.

Wherever there is a bigger settlement in Argentina, you will find some Metaleros! If you look a little bit around, you will also find bands in all this towns! Heavy Metal in all forms is very popular even in ther far south! Sadly, most of the bands don`t exist very long. In this remote area don`t exist universities or other higher schools. For that the youth has to go to the north. That is why moxt bands there have very young members, and when they become 18, it is often all over, because some of them move to the north, and the others start with family!
I write in this report about bands in all differnt Metal styles, which ever recorded something. This report might not be so interesting for the pure collectors, as there were only very few official releases, and there exist only one vinyl LP from FACTOR RH. All the rest is made on cassette and CD-r, and many recordings were just made in the rehearsal room, or live with primitive equipment. Of course there is often not even a cover for this cassettes. I thought this report is more for the Metaleros there themself, to get to know each other! Often thexy don`t know what happens and exist in the neighbour town a few hundred miles away! But I hope also to find some interested international readers, who will not look down on that, because there is no rare vinyl to get! May be there are people around who just enjoy to read what is going on in this very remote area! I start in the north (Rio Negro in the very north of Patagonia will follow soon), and then go south town by town! See the enlargement of the map to orientate yourself! THE TOWNS OF PATAGONIA AND TIERRA DEL FUEGO AND THEIR BANDS

TRELEW / PUERTO MADRYN / RAWSON
In the province of Chubut you will hit this 3 towns, which are relatively close together. They are in the lovely valley of the Chubut river, where a lot of people from Wales settled. At the coast there is the world famous peninsula Valdez. At this coast the wildlife is very abundant, and in the bays you can stroke the whales! Almost everybody has seen in TV when killer whales catch seals from the shore, which only happens here in Valdez. Because of the wildlife and nice scenery a lot of people live from tourism.
There are a lot of news about Metal in this area too! From the town of Puerto Madryn came the guys from FACTOR RH, which are the only Patagonians who ever managed to release a vinyl LP! They were very active, and made several times the long journey to Buenos Aires to play there! You can read more about them in the main section! the main man behind this band, guitar player Daniel Rodriguez still is active musicwise. He plays in the modern band CRUDO, and plays also solo Hard Rock. All the other bands are only localy known and in the deep underground. But the scene is quite active, especially the fanatic True Metal fans! Especially the singer from VOLCANIKA, Fabian "Vikingo" Colueque is one of the most active. With his band he played already in Buenos Aires, and the True Metal band PUNISHER came down to play in Chubut! Fabian has also a radio program called "Perros de la lluvia" (Dogs of the rain). Here now the bands:

SEQUEDAL is a True Metal band from Rawson. They play fast Power Metal, and I know 2 demos from them, which both were live recorded. Because of that the quality is of course not very good. The first has a very bad live sound, but withthe second demo the sound improved. This one contains also a cover version of MANOWAR`s "Hail and kill" with some Death grunts in the chorus, which sounds quite funny!

VOLCANIKA is the band of the True Metal warrior Fabian "Vikingo" Colueque! he has no Viking blood, instead he is one of the last descent of the local indian population of Patagonia! Also the other members of the band suppose to have indian blood. The demo "Defendiendo nuestra identidad" from 1997 is also recorded live, and contains simple and raw Metal with accusing lyrics. In the last years the band was not very active because Fabian had a lot of other problems, and it is hard to have a steady line up! He also has his radio show

LACRO made a 12 track demo called "Facon grande", which contains good Power Metal. Too bad, that the recording quality is not better, and it seems to have been made in the rehearsal room. If this guys would get the possibility to record more professional, it would be a real good album! It seems, that there don`t exist an cover for this CD.

CRUDO is the new band of the FACTOR RH guitar player Daniel Rodriguez, together with his brother Matias. They play quite modern Metal, but with strong traditional roots. Because of his experience and connections Daniel was able to release this CD officially and independent. This is, beside the REO CD, the only officially manufactured CD that I know from there in the south! It has also a very nice cover, but the music is only for tolerant Metal fans!

DANIEL RODRIGUEZ, the guitar player of FACTOR RH has made at least 2 different CDs as solo musician. They are called "Guitarista del sur" and "Hombre del sur". The first one contains guitar oriented Hard Rock, where it sometimes sounds heavy. The second one is pure accoustic and folcloristic. In the year 2001 he released a CD called "Mi Homenaje", which contains mainly cover songs of known Rock and Hard Rock heroes. Included is also a song of FACTOR RH, new recorded. He seems to have only local popularity, but is better than some of the known guitar names! This CDs sure are not for the pure Metal fans.

DISTORIUM is a Death Metal band from the province of Chubut. They made a demo CD called "Mortificando al moribundo". It contains not very exciting grunting, and not very interesting guitar work! So it gets boring very fast!

There are also some recordings from the band TEMPLARIO, which play good traditional Metal, and from P.U.S. I have a recording of a really great instrumental Metal track. From MORTUORIO exist a 6 track recording of unexciting Death Metal. There should exist also a demo from the band ATEOS which I could not find yet, and I have never seen a number of the local fanzine "Puno de hierro"!

COMODORE RIVADAVIA
This town is no touristic center, but it is the capital of Argentinas oil industry! All around the town you see pipes spreading to the pumps of the oil. This is no exciting place to stay, even the coast is nice. Here you find of course also Metal bands! Since a long time there is also the Metal radio programm from Alejandro Bustamante, called "El Resplandor". He also released a local compilation with extreme bands, called "Detras del chenque la Patagonia tragica" (but which I can not find in my collection in the moment!) Beside the bands I am talking about here more detailled, there were some more bands who recorded some songs. There was CEGADOR, which recorded 2 great traditional Metal songs in 1991, and DARKEST which made 2 good Power meal numbrs in 1993, before both disappeared again.

OXIDO is a young band, which likes to play the German style Metal. This is very unique in the south of Argentina. They came together in 1997, and already one year later they released a good 8 track demo with a nice cover artwork. They have problems to find replacement when sometimes members leave the band, as almost nobody in their area likes to play this sound, which uses keyboards. Also if you like this higher quality of music you can not just record in a rehearsal room, like with Thrash or Death Metal! So it is a bit more difficult for them to play and record their music! But I hope they will manage to keep up the flag of True Metal in this area, and record more of it! The demo was a good start, and we will hopefully hear more from them!

MORGUE is a brutal Death Metal band, which released in 1998 the demo CD "Bringer of the light". This one is only for some collectors who need grunting even from the end of the world, despite it sounds all the same in the rest of the world!

REO play a style which is very hard to describe! They seem to be very young, and on their CD from the year 2000, called "Promesas" they mix modern influences with traditional Metal and good guitar work all together! This is nothing for people who like it the conservative way! The CD is a real manufactured, official, independent release. In the year 2001 they recorded a cover version of V8 for the "No esta muerto quien pelea" tribute CD.

CALETA OLIVIA
Another oil town is Caleta Olivia! It is already in the next province Santa Cruz, which is the southernmost on the mainland. The next towns with Metal bands in the home province are all hundreds of miles away, so the connection to Comodore in the is much better. In the province capital town Santa Cruz seem no Metal bands to exist. The only attraction of Caleta Olivia is a huge monument of an oil worker, in the russian monumental style! But there have been some good Metal bands here! The town is also home of the southernmost fanzine in the world, called "El Hacha", and the fanzine maker released also a cassette compilation (with bands from all over Argentina) It contains also a song from the local DEKREPITOS (which play primitive Thrash and have a bad singer), and of course the local heroes ESCAPE LIBRE.
The province compilation "La casa de musica `98", which contains mainly bands from Rio Gallegos, has also songs from bands from Caleta Olivia. Beside the more known ESCAPE LIBRE there are NECRODAMUS, which play wild but good Death Metal, and AR-C-NAL, which played a good mix betwen classic and Thrash Metal.

ESCAPE LIBRE are the best known band in town. They play good Power Metal, and released their demo CD with a really nice indian warrior artwork! The voice is may be a bit monotonous, but music wise they are really good. The recording quality is of course not very good, but this guys have potential. But if they will ever have the chance to record their music more professionally is questionable!

RIO GALLEGOS
This is the most important town in the province of Santa Cruz, and it is not very pretty! Here all roads meet, as it is the point furthest south of the Argentine mainland, and close from here leaves the ferry to the island of Tierra del Fuego. This is separated by the famous waterway, the Magellanic strait. The area is not very scenic, not even the coast. But it is not far in to the Andean mountains, which have here one of the greatest sceneries of glaciers and peaks in the world! In the town there were Metal bands since the end of the 80s which all did not exist very long. Some big national acts played also in the town, like: V8; HORCAS; VIBRION; RATA BLANCA; EL DRAGON; ALMAFUERTE and others! Even the "Metal Rock" festival in 1996 made a stop here! There were not too many demos recorded in Rio Gallegos, but they released 2 really good local compilations!
1. "La Casa De La Musica `98, Heavy Metal, 1. Compilado De Santa Cruz" is a very good compilation, which was released on an official cassette. It contains also 2 bands from Caleta Olivia, which I inclused in this section. It contains also a band from an especially "exotic" place! OSIRIS came from the small mining town of Rio Turbio, which lays in the South East corner at the Chilean border. I was there, and could not imagine, that in this sleepy settlement would be some guys, who play Metal. And this guys play really good melodic Power Metal with keyboards!
From Rio Gallegos participated: SACRILEGIO, which played good Thrash Metal in KREATOR style, and they were even singing in English! NOSTRADAMUS played normal Thrash with a dark voice, they were o.k., and KATHARSIS and HEBRON played good normal Metal. About PURGATORY I will talk separate.
2. "Fuera de Extincion" is a compilation with bands of different styles of music. It was released on an official CD with nice booklet. It contains KATALEPSIA which play a strange mix of Metal, Punk and symphonic sounds! OZZMOSIS is a good Death Metal band which uses their guitars very well. PURGATORY released 2 more songs here. The rest is Punk, from which ANTIHEROES and R.E.H. are good and fast!
There were further bands in town, like STRATOS; ASTILLEROS; SNIF and more, from which I could not get any material. There is also a new young band called OREJANO which plays classic Metal, but who has nothing recorded yet. There was a Death Metal fanzine for a while, called "Sarcasmo", and the radio show "Fuera de control". There are many Punk bands in town, including the all girl HARPIAS!

PURGATORIO was may be the most important band for the Metal scene in town! They were founded in 1995. The drummer and bass player came from KATALEPSIA. From the strange style of this band, is nothing left when you listen to PURGATORIO. Instead the guys played here in the style of ALMAFUERTE, and even the voice of the singer sounds exactly like Ricardo Iorio. They released songs on the local compilations, and it seems like they never made an demo. They separated in 2000, and the drummer went to SCARNIO.

SCARNIO is the youngest band in town, and was founded in 2000. The drummer came from PURGATORIO, and a demo was released in the very same year! It contains 2 songs in good recording quality, and 2 live songs in really bad quality. The style is simple and wild Thrash with Death Metal like voice. The guitar parts are good. They also played on the Chilean side in Punta Arenas in 2000, and opened for DORSO.

RIO GRANDE
is the biggest town on the island of Tierra del Fuego. It lays in the flat northern part, and is notorious for the strong winds, which sweep through the streets! It is not very pretty, and the masses of tourists rush through on their way south to the "end of the world" in Ushuaia. But Rio Grande is without doubt the Metal capital from Fireland, because in the other town nothing happens really! Over the time there exist quite a lot of Metal bands in the town, which all did not last too long, because of the known reasons. A center of the scene is the "Imperio" radio, which exists already over 10 years. The makers Claudio Oyarzun and Mario Aguilar put also together the local compilations, and support the scene wherever they can!
The first local band was in 1988 LA SABIA DESTRUCCION. which existed till 1990. Their singer Fabian Ingressa started then with his solo project. It was also the start of the talented band LOS MONJES. End of the 90s CORROSIVA was very active, and realized an official CD. The 2 compilations deliver a good overview about the local scene in different times:
1. "Antologia Del Rock En Rio Grande" was released by the guys from "Imperio" radio, and contains some really old recordings. Like from the very first local band LA SABIA DESTRUCCION, which played good, simple Metal with hymn melodies. It also contains the 2 only released songs of LOS MONJES, which are really great,and with killer guitars. Good are also THANATOS, wich play Metal with lots of guitar work. CORROSIVA released a song here too. The other Metal bands TRAUMMA; NECRACIA are all not very exciting, and the rest is Punk and Rock.
2. "Lo Ultimo De Lo Ultimo" is a compilation in 2 parts and a video! The recordings are from the live festivals which happened in 2000. The music is more modern and agressive. This was organized by the radio "Imperio" guys too. Because of the live recording the sound is not good, but most of the bands are also not very good! The known CORROSIVA are some of the best. Good are also INDIGNACION and TRANCE, and o.k. are ARION (but their singer is really bad) and A.D.H.E.R. The whole rest has to practice a bit more!
Some of the bigger national bands made it also to Tierra del Fuego! In 1995 came HERMETICA and LOGOS and in 1998 MALON. Since then there was no other Metal band on the island. There is now also a new very young band, which plays traditional Metal, called R.G.! A extreme modern band called DESKAGA released a demo CD in 2001.

LOS MONJES (The Monks) were the first real active Metal band in town. They were founded end of the 80s. Beginning of the 90s they won a local music competition, and because of that could travel to play till Bariloche (which is in the Andean mountains much further in the north and called the "Switzerland of Argentina) In 1995 they opened for HERMETICA. In 1994 the solist CHUGO was in town, and they opened for him too. He wrote a song about his time in Rio Grande called "Donde el viento canta" (where the wind is singing). Sadly this talented band separated later! I know only the 2 songs from the "Antologia del Rock" compilation, and they are some of my favourite from Argentina!

FABIAN INGRASSIA seems to be a lonely fighter for the cause of Metal at the end of the world! It is unbeleivable how he, restless, released already 4 CDs, and all independent!! He was in the 80s singer in the first local band LA SABIA DESTRUCCION. After their split he needed some time to gather some new members, and started his own project. In 1998 he released his first CD "Desde Mi Pequenez" under his own name. The style is simple Metal witha voice that is a bit monotonous. Then every year a new CD follows: 1999 "Palabras De Invierno", 2000 "Construyendo" and 2001 "Firme En El Camino". This is quite an archievement! You can also realize that he became better over the time, but he never reached a bigger level. But who cares, he is holding the ground for the cause of Metal at the most remote corner of the world, and all theat counts is the idealism! To play in different places is of course a problem for Fueginos (Fuegians - locals of Tierra del Fuego), but he managed already to play in Entre Rios, which is in the far north of Argentina! CORROSIVA existed from 1996 till the year 2000. Some members played before in the band THANATOS (existed from 1994 till 1996) and CADENA PERPETUA. After some of the guys moved to the north, it was the end for the band. They played a mix of different styles, mainly traditional Metal but also modern and folk parts. There is also a video clip on this CD and they sing some words in the language of the extinct Indians of the island. From this CD there were only 150 copies made! They even made an official live video cassette!

R.G. (for Rio Grande) is the newest hope of the True Metal lovers in town. This are only few, as most of the other young bands play extreme, modern or Punk. The guitar player and the drummer are both only 16 years old! The second guitarist is 17, and the other two are really "old" with 20 and 21 years of age! They recorded 4 songs in the rehearsal room, which sound already quite good! Realy unusual for this area, they use keyboards and sound athmospheric, but with lots of guitars! But the best is, that they dont sound like BLIND GUARDIAN or other famous bands in this genre, but already create their own style! Of course they don`t have the possibilities and experience to make professional recordings, but this songs show already good potential! I just can say: "Keep on guys!", or like Argentines would say: "Aguante R.G."!!

USHUAIA
is the southernmost town in the world (even Chileans would complain, as their settlement Puerto Williams is further south, but no real town!!). Ushuaia is located on the beautiful southern part of Fireland, encircled by steep mountains and glaciers, and in front is the wonderful Beagle Channel! The town lives from the Military and the ever increasing amount of tourists. Whole loads of them come there and buy their souvenier shirts with thick red letters "I survived the end of the world"..........or else, and disappear again! But it is no adventure to go there, because all connections are good and safe!
In this town there are also a few Metal bands, but it was very hard to find them! The first guys which came together to play Metal were JELFAX in 1988, which changed their name in 1990 to SELK`NAM (which is the native name of the extinct local Ona indians). They were even able to play in northern towns like Rio Gallegos or Commodore Rivadavia! They played classic Metal and existed till 1995. Their singer Jorge Montenegro has a radio show called "Desde la torre" since 1994. There were also some known bands from the north who managed to come down to play here at the remotest end of their homeland.
In 1994 came HERMETICA and played. Because of the extreme costs of transport, every concert in Ushuaia looses money, as there will only be a few hundred people audience. In 1997 MALON came, and in 1990 RATA BLANCA. PAPPO was there with his Blues project several times. In the moment Metal is in deep sleep. HAMESTAGAN dont exist anymore, LEGION have line up problems since years, and LUZ ROJA is not exactly Metal! In the town there are several really good guitar players, but which don`t play in any band. There are especially 2 brothers which are really good, and the younger one is just 16 years old, and is called "Jimito" (little Jimmy)!
In 2003 the Metal scene is still in coma, and there is only one new band who crawls in this underground, named PRESAGIO! They plan to record an demo, but who knows if they can ever do this!

HAMESTAGAN existed since 1991, and had first the name NECROMANTICAL. In 1996 they recorded a raw Grindcore / Death demo, called "Patagonia: Bajo La Miera". This Cassette is the only official release from Ushuaia. It is definitly the southernmost Metal release in the whole world! Their style is brutal, but diverse. They existed till 1997.

LEGION is a young band, which was founded in 1995. Guitar player Horacio soon left the band and founded LUZ ROJA, because he likes more the Blues Rock. They had to find a new guitar player, and till today they have already the third one. The idea for the name they have from the film "The prophecy". Only in 1998 they were able to play the first time live. When the LOS FABULOSUS CADILLACS playesd in town there was a competition who would play support for them. LEGION made the second rank, and because of that could open for them, in front of 800 people. In the last years there was always a problem to find a singer. But I hope they will continue, as they play really good Power Metal!

LUZ ROJA is more like a Blues Hard Rock band, but they are in the moment the only ones who play hard music in Ushuaia! They were founded in 1995 when guitar player Horacio left LEGION. Their other guitar player was from Buenos Aires and played before in the Hardcore band MAL MOMENTO. Today he is back in he north and became a Hare Krishna!

PUNTA ARENAS
is of course different than the towns in Argentina! It is located at the Magellanic strait, and encirceled by mountains. It is not far to the spectacular mountains national park "Torres del Paine". The town itself is quite big, and the most important center in the southern Pataginia and Tierra del Fuego. It is separated geographicly totally from the rest of Chile. Between them and the rest of their homeland there is only absolutely wilderness with steep mountains and glaciers! When the locals want to travel to thr north, they have to go by plane, 4 days by ship, or through Argentina! The relation to the Argentine neighbour is not the best, and there is prejudice against each other. The whole area is full of military, and the borderline is still disputed! They still quarrel about some ice peaks and 3 tiny, useless islands! They were twice on the verge of a war about this, and only the "holy father" could stop them from actually shoot!
There were always some guys who played Metal in town. There are also differences musicwise between Chile and Argentina! In Chile they sing all in English, and like more the extreme styles! This is no different in Punta Arenas! But there are also similar problems, as the youth moves north to go to university or other schools, or for work. So, also here the bands last not very long! But many come back in the summer for vacations, and in this time there starts a lot of jamming between a lot of different band members. There are not too many places to play for Metal bands. There are not enough fans, and the scene is small (maximum 200 fans), so they often organize concerts together with Punk bands.
The own scene started only in the end of the 80s, when around 1989 PURGATORY started to play Death Metal. This guys split soon, and in 1991 started OVERTHROW and INFIDEL also to play Death Metal. But also this bands split soon, and members of both bands founded in 1993 DEHUMANIZE: They were the first to record some own songs in 1994. This songs are simple Death Metal. Shortly after the recording the band split. 2 members of them founded SCREEN HAGEN. In 1997 some guys founded HIELO NEGRO, which play a very unique style in the far south, they like Rock`n Roll Metal in the HELLACOPTERS style! Especially in Punta Arenas there is not enough auddience for this kind of music, so they moved to Santiago, where they seem to have some success in the underground! In the year 2000 one of the bigger national bands, DORSO, came into town. The new band VASTAGO opened for them. In a kind of "cultural exchange" SCARNIO from the Argentine Rio Gallegos played too, and DORSO went to Rio Gallegos! The Metal scene in Punta Arenas is in a pity state right now! VASTAGO moved completely to the north, and SCREEN HAGEN have line up problems since a long time. Only FROZEN EMPIRE seem to do well. Radio programms exist only for a while. One was called "Sonfonia extremo" which was done by a member of HIELO NEGRO.

SCREEN HAGEN is a very talented band, and the main man behind them is guitar player Chino. They exist since 1995, when 2 guys came from DEHUMANIZE, to play different music. Instead of Death Metal their new band plays high quality Progressive Metal with excellent guitar work! But they seldom play live, as they have no singer since a long time. So most of the time they just play for themselves, and as real perfectionsts they work a lot on their songs! This you can realize when you listen to their high quality recordings! The other guitar player Pepo lived for a while in Santiago, and played together with TORTURER. I hope they sometime find a good singer and record their great insrumental recordings with vocals. Chino and his bass player have also a Thrash side project called FATUM, together with the actual guitar player of TORTURER (which is also from Punta Arenas and visits his hometown in summer).

FROZEN EMPIRE is the band from bass player Ricardo Palmer. He moved to Santiago and played with BLÖDEN WEDD, a traditional Metal band who released already 2 CDs. In the year 2000 he moved back to Punta Arenas and founded his own local True Metal band! The guitar player and drummer played before in some cover bands. This are very talented musicians, and planned to record an album in 2001. If they managed it I don`t know, as my informations are all from beginning of 2001! They play good traditional Heavy Metal with slight teutonic influences. Ricardo and his guitar player have also a side project. Together with a female drummer and keyboarder they have the band MANTIZA, which plays in the style of THE CURE!

VASTAGO is a Death Metal band founded by the couple Manolo (guitar) and Elisabeth (vocals). This is very special, as I don`t know any band with a female singer in the whole of Chile! But here at the southern end of this 5000 km long narrow country I found one! They founded the band in the year 2000 and play high quality Death Metal with good guitar work! The voice of Elisabeth is clearly to recognize as feminin (which is not the case in a lot of other Death Metal bands with female singers, where you can not hear if it is man or woman!). They are also very active in the scene, and work for the fanzine "Hellhound". But in 2001 they moved north, and planned to record a CD!

METAL EN PATAGONIA Y EN LA TIERRA DEL FUEGO
Este es un reporte especial, desde el extremo mas al sur del mundo. Es fascinante, cuando tu viajas a este sitio tan al sur, y encuentras fanaticos del Metal e incluso miembros de bandas, en los sitios mas remotos. Le dedico este reportaje a los metaleros de Patagonia y a los metaleros fueguinos!
Controversial,es el borde de La Patagonia en el norte, normalmente, el sue de La Pampa y el Rio Negro conforman el comienzo de la Patagonia. Aqui la ancha y fertil tierra de La Pampa, se convierten lentamente, en un desierto si fin. Mientras mas al sur te mueves, mas remoto se vuelve, y los pobledos estan a millas de distancia una de las otras, y entre estas solo desierto! La fauna de la costa es rica, pero adentrandose en el estrecho interno, vida salvaje es dificil de encontrar. Al oeste los gigantescos Andes descansan cubiertos de madera y glaciares. Esta cadena de montañas, son las que dividen a Chile de Argentina, el la perte chilena se encuentra un bosque y los frios fiordos. Muy al sur en Chile, no existen poblados, no hay caminos y no existe vida humana por cientos de millas. Esta parte del mundo es mas salvaje,que el norte de Canada o Alaska!!! Solo en el extremo sur, cerca de La Tierra del Fuego existe una tierra plana en Chile, pero los chilenos solo pueden llegar a este lugar por barco o por caminos en Argentina, esta area es tambien verde en los dos lados de la frontera. La linea de la frontera es muy confusa, y hay acuerdos de guerra acerca de una islas que no tienen ningun uso o cimas de algunas montañas, mas de una vez.
No muy lejos de de la tierra principal, se encuentran las Islas Malvinas (Falkland), con 2000 britanicos, que se resisten a los reclamos de los argentinos. Despues de la guerra de las Malvinas el 1982, en donde los Argentinos conquistaron las islas, y los Ingleses los forsaron atras, en una guerra sangrienta (unos 600 caidos) las relaciones estan bastante frias!! Para distraer a la gente pobre de Argentina, de los verdaderos problemas en el pais, se les adoctrina desde pequeños con la propaganda de que tienen que recuperar las islas! Asi que cada argentino patriotico, tiene este dolor fantasmal en sus labios...de que le falta algo si no vuelve a traer sus islas. Mis amigos argentinos, los amo mucho!! Pero abran y limpien su mente, y piensen independientemente! Si ustedes quieren, tener nuevamente las fronteras del 1832, deben quedarse en Buenos Aires y devolver el resto nuevamente a los indios. Si sacan fuera el corrupto gobierno, tipico de Latinoamerica, habra una oportunidad de recuperar las islas, pero mientras se les de la oportunidad de escoger por un mejor gobierno europeo, no las tendran. Cuando visite estas islas se desborono mi esperanza, de encontrar alguna banda de Metal tradicional o NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, termino que se usa para las bandas en el estilo de IRON MAIDEN y otras al principio de los 80) solo existe una banda de "covers" llamada FIGHTING PIGS. Incluso mas al sur, en el Antartico, tampoco pude encontrar una banda de metal, quiza hubo algunos cientificos en sus estaciones "jamming" algo de Metal!? Pero en la estacion, "Faraday" una viaja estacio Britanica (ahora Ukraniana), por lo menos pude encontrar algunos vinilos de BLACK SABBATH y DEEP PURPLE en la barra!! Estoes prueba de que hasta en el septimo continente, se ha regado el Metal!!!
En Patagonia, antes de 1870 mandan las tribus de indios, estas pequeñas pero marciales tribus primeramente resistieron a los españoles y luego de la independencia a los Argentinos, por un largo tiempo. El poder de los blancos estuvo por cientos de años solo a una corta distancia de Buenos Aires, y en muchas campañas fueron paleados por los indios a los que llamaban "Malon" ya que se suponia que estos se robaban a sus mujeres y estancaban el progreso. Los indios se convirtieron en expertos jinetes despues de que los españoles introdujeron al caballo en America, y a caballo peleaban con las boleadoras (tres pelotas conectadas por cuerdas de cuero, que se les dan vueltas sobre la cabeza y al tuirarlas se enredan el las piernas de las victimas). Solo hasta el siglo 19, los Argentinos logran empujar bastante hacia el sur, pero el Rio Negro fue todavia por mucho tiempo, la frontera. Cuando los estadounidenses comenzaron con las guerras en contra de los indios y rindieron y exterminaron a las tribus del oeste, los Argentinos, al mismo tiempo ,empezaron su empuje hacia el sur! Esta llamada "Conquista Del Desierto", fue dirigida por el sangriento General Roca, y termino con la extincion de la mayoria de las tribus en el sur. Por encima de la resistencia heroica de las pequeñas tribus, no pudieron parar el avance de los blancos, y se implantaron gigantescas granjas de ovejas. Estos barones de las ovejas, que eran increiblemente ricos, pagaban recompensas por cuerpos de indios muertos (y las familias de estos asesinos son todavia el centro cultural y financiero de Argentina).
Hoy las 4 tribus del extremo sur estan extintas! Es muy triste que esta historia sea completamente desconocida fuera de Argentina, no existen peliculas o libros en ingles o aleman acerca de esta historia solo millones de mierdas de los estados unidos, sobre los vaqueros contra los indios. Hoy la gente vive dispersa por todo el sur, y el negocio de las ovejas conel famoso gaucho, ha bajado mucho economicamente, muchas estancias estan cerradas, y como en todo el pais la economia esta colapsando.
Donde quiera que hay un establecimiento grande en la Argentina, encontraras metaleros! Y si te fijas un poco mas encontraras bandas en todos estos pueblos! El Heavy Metal es muy popular, incluso en el extremo sur del pais! Tristemente muchas de las bandas no existen por largo tiempo, ya que en esta region no hay universidades ni escuelas de nivel alto, por lo que los jovenes tienen que ir al norte a estudiar y los otros empiezan a formar familia. Por esta razon las bandas tienen miembros muy jovenes, y cuando estos cumplen la mayoria de edad, todo se acaba, por lo antes comentado. En este reportaje hablo sobre bandas de diferentes estilos, que hayan grabado algo .Este reportaje quiza no sea de interes para los coleccionistas, ya que solo un pequeño puñado de grabaciones se han realizado en esta region, y solo existe un disco en vinilo, el disco de la banda FACTOR RH, todo lo demas se ha grabado en KCT y CDr, ademas muchas de las grabaciones se han realizado en ensayos o en vivo con equipos primitivos. Ademas no hay portadas de estos KCTs, asi que creo que este reportaje esta hecho mas para los metaleros de esta misma region, para que entre ellos se conozcan, ya que nisiquiera saben que esta ocurriendo en el proximo pueblo mas cercano, a cientos de millas unos de los motros, como quiera espero tener algunos lectores internacionales interesados en este reportaje, que leeran este por el contenido, ya que no existen discos raros que buscar, se que habra gente que se entetendran informandose de que esta pasando en esta remota region del mundo. Empiezo en el norte (Rio Negro en el norte de la Patagonia es el que sigue) y luego ire a sur localidad por localidad! Ve al mapa en este sitio para que estes orientado encuanto a los lugares que se comenten. Ahora sigueme a conocer los metaleros del lugar mas apartado del mundo!!!! LAS CIUDADES DE PATAGONIA / TIERRA DEL FUEGO Y SU BANDAS

TRELEW/PUERTO MADRYN/RAWSON
En la provincia de Chubut te encontraras con estos tres pueblos,que estan relativamente cerca,se encuentran en el grandioso valle del rio Chubut, donde vive mucha gente de Gales. En la costa esta la mundialmente conocida Peninsula Valdez, en esta costa la vida salvaje es abundante, y en la bahia puedes acercarte a las ballenas!! Casi todo el mundo ha visto a las orcas atrapando a las focas al salir del agua, cosa que solo pasa aqui en Valdez y ya que hay tanta vida silvestre se vive bastante del turismo.
Hay muchas noticias de Metal aqui tambien! De Puerto Marin vienen los chicos de FACTOR RH, que son los unicos Patagonicos que han sacado un vinilo, eran muy activos y viajaban mucho a Buenos Aires a tocar, en la seccion principal leeras mas acerca de ellos. El personaje principal de esta agrupacion, el guitarra Daniel Rodriguez esta activo musicalmente aun, toca en la moderna banda CRUDO, y toca Hard Rock como solista, las demas bandas solo son conocidas localmente y estan en lo subterraneo. Pero la escena esta activa!! En especial los fans de verdadero Metal, especialmente el cantante de VOLCANIKA, Fabian "Vikingo" Coluequees de los mas activos! Con su banda ha tocado ya en Buenos Aires y la banda de Metal PUNISHER, fue a tocar a Chubut, Fabian ademas tiene un programa de radio que se llama, "Perros de la lluvia". Aqui las bandas:

SEQUEDAL
Banda de Metal tradicional de Rawson, tocan Power Metal rapido, y se de dos demos de ellos, que son grabados en vivo, y por esto la calidad no es muy buena El primero es malo en sonido pero en el segundo la calidad mejoro. El segundo demo tiene una version de "Hail and Kill" de MANOWAR, con unos coros en voces podridas que suenan graciosos!

VOLCANIKA
Es la banda del guerrero del Metal Fabian "Vikingo" Colueque. Este no tiene sangre de vikingos, pero es de los ultimos desendientes de los indios locales de la Patagonia, incluso los otros integrantes de la banda supuestamente tienen sangre de indio. El demo, "Defendiendo nuestra indentidad", del 97, tambien esta grabado en vivo, y contiene Metal agresivo con letras acusatorias. Een los ultimos años la banda no ha sido muy activa, or que Fabian ha tenido muchos problemas y se le ha hecho dificil mantener una alineacion. Ademas tiene su programa de radio.

LACRO
Hicieron un demo de 12 canales llamado "Falcon Grande", que contiene buen Power Metal, amlo es que la calidad de grabacion es mal y parece que se grabo en el cuarto de ensayo! Si estos chicos logran grabar algo mas profesional seguramente sera un tremendo disco de Metal, parece que no hay portada para este demo cd.

CRUDO
Es la nueva banda de el guitarra de FACTOR RH, Daniel Rodriguez junto a su hermano Matias. Tocan Metal moderno, pero con fuertes raices tradicionales. Ya que tiene bastantes conecciones ha podido sacar este CD, oficialmente e independiente. Este junto con el de REO, son los unicos CDs oficiales que se conocen de esta region. Ademas tiene una portada buena, aunque la musica es solo para fans tolerantes!

DANIEL RODRIGUEZ
El guitarrista de FACTOR RH, ha grabado por lo menos dos CDs como solista, "Guitarrista del sur" y "Hombre del sur" son los titulos. El primero contiene Hard Rock orientado por la guitarra que a veces suena pesado. El segundo es puramente folkklorico y acustico. Parece que solo tiene popularidad local, aunque es mejor que la mayoria de los guitarristas conocidos! Estos CD no son para los Metaleros de verdad!!

DISTORIUM es una banda DEATH METAL de la provincia de CHUBUT. Hicieron un demo en CD llamado "Mortificando al moribundo". No contiene muy excitante gruñidos ni interesantes trabajo de guitarra. Entonces se pone aburrido muy rápido!
Hay tambien algunas grabaciones de la banda TEMPLARIO que tocan buen Metal tradicional y de P.U.S. tengo una grabacion de un buen tema instrumental metalero. De MORTUORIO existe una grabación de 6 canciones de inexcitable Death Metal. Tambien debe haber un demo de la banda ATEOS que no pude encontrar todavía, y nunca vi un numero del fanzine local “Puño de Hierro”.

COMODORO RIVADAVIA
Este pueblo no es turístico pero es la capital de las industrias petroleras argentinas! Por sobre todo el pueblo ves las pipas desparramando bombas de petróleo. No es un lugar muy estimulante para quedarse, hasta la costa es linda. Aca por supuesto encontrás bandas metaleras! Desde largo tiempo está el programa de radio "El Resplandor" de Alejandro Bustamante. Tambien el lanzón un disco de compilado con bandas locales extremas llamada "Detras del chenque la Patagonia tragica" (pero el cual no puedo encontrar en mi colección ahora!). Ademas de las bandas que estoy hablando aca mas detalladamente, hubo algunas otras bandas que grabaron algunas canciones. Estuvo CEGADOR quien grabó 2 canciones de gran Metal tradicional en 1991 y DARKEST quienes hicieron 2 buenos themas de Power Metal en 1993 antes de desaparecer ambas de nuevo.

OXIDO es una banda joven a la cual le gusta tocar Metal al estilo alemán. Esta es muy única en el sur de Argentina. Se juntaron en 1997 y un año mas tarde lamzaron un buen demo de 8 temas con una linda portada. Tenían problemas en encontrar reemplazantes cuando a veces los miembros la dejaban ya que casi a nadie le gusta tocar este sonido, que usa teclados. Tambien si te gusta una alta calidad de sonido no podes grabar en una sala de ensayo, como con el Thrash o Death Metal! Entonces es un poquito mas difícil para ellos grabar y tocar su música! Pero espero que se manejen para tener en alto la bandera del Verdadero Metal en esta area, y graben mas de eso! El demo fue un buen comienzo y esperanzadamente podremos escuchar mas de ellos!

MORGUE es una banda brutal de Death Metal quienes lanzaron en 1998 un demo CD “Bringer of The light” (“Traedor de luz”). Esta es solo para algunos coleccionistas quienes necesitan gruñidos hasta en el fin del mundo. A pesar de eso suena todo igual en el resto del mundo.

REO hace un estil muy difícil de describir! Parecen ser muy jóvenes y en su CD del año 2000 llamado “Promesas” mezclan influencias modernas con Metal tradicional y un buen trabajo de guitarra todo junto! Esto es nada para la gente que le gusta la manera conservadora! Este CD es realmente manufacturado, oficial e independientemente lanzado. En el año 2001 grabaron el cover de V8 “No esta muerto quien pelea” para el CD tributo.

CALETA OLIVIA
Otro petrolero pueblo es Caleta Olivia! Esta en la siguiente provincia Santa Cruz que es la mas sureña del continente. Las próximos pueblos con bandas de Metal en la casa provincial esta a cientos de millas lejos, asi que la coneccion a Comodoro es mucho mejor. En Santa Cruz pareciera que no existieran las bandas metaleras. La única atracción de Caleta Olivia es un inmenso monumento de un trabajador petrolero al estilo ruso! Pero hubo buenas bandas de Metal aca! El pueblo es tambien el hogar del fanzine mas sureño del mundo llamado “El Hacha” y el que lo hace también lanzó un casette compilado (con todas bandas argentinas). Contiene tambien una canción del local DECRÉPITOS (quienes tocan Thrash primitivo y tienen un mal cantante) y por supuesto los héroes locales ESCAPE LIBRE.
La provinciana compilación "La casa de musica `98", que principalmente contiene bandas de Rio Gallegos, tiene tambien bandas de Caleta Olivia. Ademas de los mas conocidos ESCAPE LIBRE estan los NECRODAMUS, que tocan salvaje pero buen Death Metal y AR-C-NAL, que hacen una buena mezcla entre Thrash y clásico.

ESCAPE LIBRE son la banda mejor conocida del pueblo. Tocan buen Power Metal y lanzaron su demo CD con una buena portada de un aborigen guerrero! La voz es por ahí un poquito monótona, pero musicalmente son muy buenos. Por supuesto, la calidad de la grabación no es muy buena, pero estos tipos tienen potencial! Pero si tengan la oportunidad de grabar su música en un disco mas profesionalmente es cuestionable!

RIO GALLEGOS
Este es el punto mas importante en la provincia de Santa Cruz y no es muy linda! Aca todas las rutas se encuentran ya que es el punto sureño mas lejano de la Argentina y cerca de aca salen el transbordador a la isla de Tierra del Fuego. Esta separado por el famoso Estrecho de Magallanes. El area no es muy vistosa ni siquiera la costa. Pero no muy lejos las montañas andinas, hay aca uno de los mas grandiosos escenarios glaciares y cimas en el mundo! En el pueblo hay bandas metaleras desde fines de los 80 las cuales no existieron por largo tiempo. Algunas actuaciones grandes nacionales tocaron en el pueblo, como: V8 ; HORCAS; VIBRION; RATA BLANCA; EL DRAGON; ALMAFUERTE y otras! Hasta el “Metal Rock Festival” en 1996 hicieron una parada aca! No hubo muchos demos grabados en Rio Gallegos, pero lanzaron 2 realmente buenas compilaciones locales!
1."La Casa De La Musica `98, Heavy Metal, 1. Compilado De Santa Cruz" es una muy buena compilación que fue lanzada en un casette oficial. Contiene tambien 2 bandas de Caleta Olivia la cual incluí en esta sección. Contiene tambien una banda de un lugar “exótico”! OSIRIS viene de una pequeño pueblo minero de Rio Turbio, que queda en el sudeste al borde de Chile. Yo estaba ahí, y no podia imaginarme, que en este dormido establecimiento habría unos tipos, que tocaran Metal. Y estos tipos tocan muy buen Power Metal melódico con teclados!
De Rio gallegos participaron : SACRILEGIO, que tocan buen Thrash Metal a lo KREATOR y hasta cantaban en inglés! NOSTRADAMUS tocaron Thrash normal con una voz oscura, estaba bueno, y KATHARSIS y HEBRON tocaron buen Metal normal. Sobre PURGATORY voy a hablar por separado.
2."Fuera de Extincion" es una compilación con diferentes estilos de música. Fue lanzado como CD oficial y con un lindo folleto. Contiene CATALEPSIA que tocan una extraña mezcla de Metal, Punk sonido sinfónico! OZZMOSIS es una buena banda de Death Metal que usan las guitarras muy bien. PURGATORY lanzó 2 canciones mas aca. El resto es Punk de los cuales ANTIHÉROES y R.E.H. son buenos y rápidos!
Habia mas bandas en el pueblo, como STRATOS; ASTILLEROS; SNIF y mas de las cuales no pude conseguir ningún material. Hay tambien una nueva joven banda llamada OREJANO que toca Metal clásico, pero que no tienen nada grabado todavía. Hubo un fanzine Death Metal por un tiempo, llamado SARCASMO, y el show de radio “Fuera de Control”. Hay muchas bandas Punks, incluso la banda de chicas HARPIAS!
BUSCO CONTACTO PARA CHICOS DE ESCENA DE RIO GALLEGOS!!

PURGATORIO fue por ahí la banda mas importante en la escena Metal del pueblo! Fueron fundados en 1995. El batero y el bajista vienen de CATALEPSIA. Del extraño sonido de esta banda, no se aleja nada de PURGATORIO. En cambio los tipos tocan aca al estilo de ALMAFUERTE y hasta la voz del cantante suena igual a Ricardo Iorio. Lanzaron canciones en las compilaciones locales y parece que nunca hicieron un demo. Se separaron en el 2000 y el batero se fue a SCARNIO.

SCARNIO es la banda mas joven del pueblo y fue fundada en el 2000. El batero viene de PURGATORIO y el demo fue lanzado el mismo año! Contiene 2 canciones grabadas en buena calidad y 2 en vivo en realmente mala calidad. El estilo es simple y salvaje Thrash con Death Metal en voz. La parte de guitarras esta buena. Tambien tocaron del lado chileno Arenas en 2000 y abrieron para DORSO.

RIO GRANDE
Es el pueblo mas grande de Tierra del Fuego. Yace en la planicie del norte y son notorios los fuertes vientos que barren las calles. No es muy linda y la masa de turistas se precipitan en el camino hacia “el fin del mundo” en Usuahia. Pero Rio Grande es sin lugar a dudad la capital del Metal en Tierra del Fuego, porque en el otro pueblo no pasa nada! Por sobre el tiempo existieron bastantes bandas de Metal las cuales no duraron muchopor razones conocidas. Un centro de la escena es la radio “Imperio” que existe desde hace ya 10 años. Los creadores Claudio Oyarzun y Mario Aguilar pusieron juntos tambien las compilaciones locales y soportan la escena dondes sea que pueda! La 1era banda local fue en 1988 LA SABIA DESTRUCCIÓN que existió hasta 1990. Su cantante Fabian Ingressa empezó después su proyecto en solitario. Tambien fue el comienzo para los talentosos LOS MONJES. A fines de los 90 CORROSIVA era muy activa y lanzaron un disco oficial. Las 2 compilaciones deliberaron una buena crítica sobre la escena local en diferentes tiempos.
1."Antologia Del Rock En Rio Grande" fue lanzada por los tipos de la radio “Imperio” y contiene grabaciones viejísimas. Como de la 1era banda local LA SABIA DESTRUCCIÓN que tocaban buen, simple Metal con himnos melódicos. Tambien contiene las únicas 2 canciones lanzadas de LOS MONJES que son realmente grandiosos con guitarras asesinas! Buenos son tambien los THANATOS que tocan Metal con un monton de trabajo de guitarras. CORROSIVA lanzón un tema aca tambien. Las otras bandas metaleras como TRAUMMA; NECRACIA no son muy excitantes y el resto son Punk y Rock.
2."Lo Ultimo De Lo Ultimo" es una compilación en 2 partes y un video! Las grabaciones son de recitales en vivo del 2000. La música es mas moderna y agresiva. Tambien fue organizado por los chicos de las radio “Imperio”. Por se la grabación en vivo no tiene muy buen sonido, pero la mayoría de las bandas no son muy buenas. Los conocidos CORROSIVA son algo de lo mejor. Tambien buenos son los INDIGNACIÓN y TRANCE y ok son los ARIOS (pero su cantante es malísimo) y A.D.H.E.R. Todo el resto tienen que practicar un poquito mas. Algunas de las bandas nacionales mas grandes tambien vinieron a Tierra del Fuego! En 1995 vino HERMÉTICA y LOGOS y en 1998 MALÓN. Desde entonces no ha habido otra banda metalera en la isla. Hay ahora tambien una joven buena banda que hace Metal tradicional llamada R.G.! Una extrema banda moderna llamada DESKAGA lanzón un CD en demo en el 2001.

LOS MONJES fueron la 1era banda metalera activista en el pueblo.Fueron fundados a fines de los 80. A principios de los 90 ganaron un concuso local y por eso pudieron viajar para tocar en Bariloche. En 1995 abrieron para HERMÉTICA. En 1994 el solista CHUGO estaba en el pueblo y abrieron para el tambien. El escribio una canción de cuando estuvo en Rio Grande llamada “Donde el viento canta”. Tristemente esta talentosa banda se separó después. Yo conozco solo 2 canciones del “Antología del Rock” compilado y son de mis preferidos de Argentina!

FABIAN INGRASSIA parece ser un solitario guerrero por el Metal al fin del Mundo! Es increíble como el, inquieto, lanzó 4 CD y todos independientes!!! Fue en los 80 en cantante de la 1er banda local LA SABIA DESTRUCCION. Después de la separación necesito algo de tiempo para reunir algunos miembros nuevos y empezar su propio proyecto. En 1998 lanzó su 1er CD “Desde mi pequeñez” bajo su propio nombre. El estilo es Metal simple con una voz un poco monótona. Luego cada año un CD nuevo le siguió: 1999 "Palabras De Invierno", 2000 "Construyendo" and 2001 "Firme En El Camino". Esto es todo un logro! Tambien te podes dar cuenta que mejoro con el tiempo pero nunca alcanzón un mayor nivel. Pero a quien le importa, esta aguantando la causa por el Metal en la esquina mas remota del mundo y eso todo lo que cuenta es el idealismo! Tocar en diferentes lugares es un problema para los fueguinos pero se las arregló para tocar e Entre Rios! Todos estos CD son por supuesto demos CD hechos por si mismo, pero hechos muy lindos, y el 3ero tiene hasta una gruesa gacetilla impresa! Contacto : ingrassia@netcombbs.com.ar

CORROSIVA existió desde 1996 hasta el año 2000. Algunos miembros tocaron antes en TANATHOS (existieron desde 1994 hasta 1996) y CADENA PERPETUA. Luego algunos de los chicos se mudaron al norte, fue el fin de la banda. Toacaban una mezcla de estilos, principalmente Metal tradicional pero tambien partes modernas y folclóricas. También hay un video en este CD y tambien cantan algunas palabras en el lenguaje de los aborígenes extinguidos de las isla. De este CD se hicieron 150 copias! Hasta hicieron un video oficial en vivo!

R.G. (por Rio Grande) es la nueva esperanza de los amantes del Metal Verdadero en el pueblo. Estos son algunos ya que las otras bandas hacen extremo, moderno o Punk. El guitarrista y batero tienen ambos 16 años! El 2do guitarrista tiene 17 y los otros dos son muy “viejos” con 20 y 21 años! Grabaron 4 canciones en la sala de ensayo que suenan muy bien! Realmente inusual para esta area usan teclados y son muy atmosféricos pero con un montón de guitarras! Pero lo mejor es que no suenan a BLIND GUARDIAN u otra banda famosa de este género, crean su propio estilo! Por supuesto que no tienen las posibilidades ni experiencia para hacer una grabación profesional pero estas canciones demuestran un gran potencial! Yo solo puedo decir: "Aguante R.G."!!

USUAHIA
Es el lugar mas sureño del mundo (hasta los chilenos se quejan, ya que su establecimiento Puerto Williams está lo suficientemente al sur pero no es un pueblo de verdad!). Usuahia esta ubicada en la parte mas sureña de Tierra del Fuego, cercada por empinadas montañas y glaciares y al frente esta el maravilloso canal de Beagle! El pueblo vive de los militares y las siempre creciente cantidad de turistas. Todos vienen aca y compran su remera de recuerdo con letras rojas “Sobreviví al fin del mundo”...........u otra y desaparecen de nuevo! Pero no es aventurista ir ahí porque todas las conecciones son buenas y seguras. En este lugar habia algunas bandas metaleras pero fue muy difícil encontrarlas! Los primeros tipos que se juntaron a tocar Metal fueron los JELFAX en 1988, que en 1990 cambiaron su nombre a SELK`NAM (el cual es el nombre local de los extinguidos aborígenes Onas). Hasta tocaron en los nórdicos lugares como Rio Gallegos y Comodoro Rivadavia! Tocaban Metal clásico y existieron hasta 1995. Su cantante Jorge Montenegro tiene un show de radio desde 1994 llamado “Desde la torre”. Hubo bandas conocidas desde el norte que se manejaron para bajar y tocar en el mas remoto final de sus hogares. En 1994 vino HERMETICA y tocó. Por los extremos costos de transporte, cada concierto en Usuahia, pierde plata ya que habría solo unos cientos de personas. En 1997 vino MALON y en 1990 RATA BLANCA. Pappo estuvo alli con su proyecto de Blues varias veces. HAMESTAGAN no existe mas, LEGIÓN tiene problemas de alineamiento y LUZ ROJA no es exactamente Metal! En el lugar hay varios guitarristas buenísimos pero que no tocan en ninguna banda. Hay especialmente 2 hermanos que tocan realmente muy bien, y el mas jovencito tiene solo 16 años y es llamado "Jimito".
En 2003 la escena es siempre en un coma, y la unica nueva banda se llama PRESAGIO!

HAMESTAGAN existe desde 1991 y 1ero tuvieron el nombre NECROMANTICAL. En 1996 grabaron su demo de crudo Grindcore / Death, llamado "Patagonia: Bajo La Mira". Este casette es el unico lanzamiento oficial de Usuahia. Es definitivamente el mas sureño metalero lanzamiento de todo el mundo! Su estilo es brutal pero diverso. Existieron hasta 1997.

LEGIÓN es una banda joven fundada en 1995. El guitarrista Horacio dejo pronto la banda y fundó LUZ ROJA, porque le gusta mas el Blues rockero. Tuvieron que encontrar otro guitarrista y hasta hoy tuvieron el 3ero. La idea del nombre la tuvieron por la película “La Profecía”. Solo en 1998 tuvieron la 1era oportunidad de tocar en vivo. Cuando LOS FABULOSOS CADILLACS tocaron ahí, hubo una competencia de quien seria soporte. LEGIÓN salió 2do y por eso abrieron para ellos al frente de 800 personas. En los ultimos años siempre huno algun problema para encontrar cantante. Pero espero que continúen ya que tocan muy buen Power Metal!!

LUZ ROJA es mas como una banda de Blues Hard Rock, pero son los unicos que hasta el momento tocan musica pesada en Usuahia! Fundados en 1995 cuando el guitarrista Horacio dejó LEGIÓN. Su otro guitarrista era de Buenos Aires y toco antes en la banda Hardcore MAL MOMENTO. Hoy esta de nuevo en el norte y se volvió un Hare Krishna!

PUNTA ARENAS
Es por supuesto diferente a los otras partes en Argentina! Esta ubicada en el estrecho de Magallanes y rodeada de montañas. No está lejos del espectacular parque nacional de montañas “Torres del Paine”. El lugar en si es bastante grande y es el centro mas importante del sur patagónico y de Tierra del Fuego. Esta separado geográficamente del resto de Chile. Entre ellos y el resto de la patria hay solamente absoluta salvajidad con montañas empinadas y glaciares! Cuando los locales quieren ir al norte tienen que ir por avion, 4 dias en barco o por Argentina! La relacion de los vecinos argentinos no es la mejor, y hay prejuicio los uno con los otros. Toda el area esta llena de militares y los limites siguen siendo disputados! Todavía discuten por unos picos de hielo y 3 islas chiquitas y sin uso! Estuvieron al borde 2 veces de una guerra por esto y solo el “sagrado padre” pudo evitar que se tiroteen! Siempre hubo gente que toco Metal en el lugar. Tambien hay diferencias musicales entre Chile y Argentina! En Chile cantan todo en inglés y estilos mas extremos. Esto no es diferente en Punta Arenas! Pero tambien hay problemas similares ya que la juventud se mueve al norte para ir a la universidad u otras escuelas, o trabajo. Entonces tampoco las bandas no duran mucho. Pero muchos vuelven en el verano por las vacaciones y empiezan una pelea entre los miembros de todas las bandas. No hay muchos lugares para que las bandas metaleras toquen. No hay suficiente fans y la escena es chica (máximo 200 heavies) entonces usualmente organizan recitales con bandas Punks.
La propia escena empezó a fines de los 80 cuando alrededor de 1989 PURGATORY empezó a tocar DEATH METAL. Estos tipos se separaron rápido y en 1991 empezaron OVERTHROW e INFIDEL para tocar Death Metal. Pero tambien estas bandas se separaron pronto y miembros de ambas bandas formaron en 1993 DEHUMANIZE: fueron los 1eros en grabar propias canciones en 1994. Estas canciones son simple Death Metal. Poco después de las grabaciones la banda se separó. Dos miembros de ella fundaron SCREEN HAGEN. En 1997 unos chicos fundaron HIELO NEGRO que tocaban un estilo muy único en el lejos sur, les gusta el Rock & Roll Metal al estilo de HELLACOPTER! En Punta Arenas en especial no hay suficiente audiencia para esta clase de musica, asi que se mudaron a Santiago, y parece que tuvieron algo de éxito en la escena under! En el año 2000 una de las mas grande bandas nacionales vinieron al pueblo. La nueva banda VASTAGO abrió para ellos. En un tipo de “intercambio cultural” SCARNIO de la argentina Rio Gallegos tocó tambien y DORSO fue a Rio Gallegos! La escena en Punta Arenas esta en un estado lamentable ahora! VASTAGO se mudo completamente al norte y SCREEN HAGE tiene problemas de alineción desde hace largo tiempo. Solo FROZEN EMPIRE parece estar bien. Los progaramas radiales existieron solo por un tiempo. Una fue llamada “Sinfonía Extrema” que era hecha por un miembro de HIELO NEGRO.

SCREEN HAGEN es una banda muy talentosa y el hombre principal detrás de ellos es el guitarrista Chino. Existen desde 1995 cuando 2 tipos vinieron de DEHUMANIZE a tocar musica diferente. En vez de Death Metal su nueva banda toca Metal Progresivo de alta calidad. Pero raramente tocan en vivo ya que no tienen cantante desde hace mucho tiempo. Asi que la mayoría del tiempo tocan solo para ellos y como verdaderos perfeccionistas trabajan mucho en sus canciones. Te podes dar cuenta de esto cuando escuchas sus grabaciones de alta calidad! El otro guitarrista, Pepo, vivio un tiempo en Santiago y toco junto a TORTURER. Espero que en algun momento encuentren cantante y graben su grandioso instrumental con voz. Chino y su bajista tienen tambien un proyecto paralelo trasero llamado FATUM, junto con el actual guitarrista de TORTURER (que es tambien de Punta Arenas y visita su hogar en el verano).

FROZEN EMPIRE es la banda del bajista Ricardo Palmer. Se mudó a Santiago y tocó con BLÖDEN WEDD, una banda de Metal tradicional que ya sacó 2 CD. En el 2000 se mudó de nuevo a Punta Arenas y fundó su propia banda de True Metal! El guitarrista y batero tocaron antes en bandas de covers. Estos son músicos muy talentososy tienen planeado grabar un disco en el 2002. Si se las arreglan no lo sé, ya que toda mi información es de principios del 2001. Tocan buen Metal tradicional con ligeras influencias teutónicas. Junto a una batera femenina y tecladista tienen la banda MANTIZA que tocan al estilo THE CURE.

VASTAGO Es una banda Death Metal fundada por la pareja Manolo (guitarra) y Elisabeth (voz). Esta es muy especial ya que no conozco ninguna banda con una voz femenina en Chile! Pero aca al fin del sur de este pais de 5000 km de largo y estrecho encontré a una! Fundaron la banda en el 2000 y tocan Death Metal de alta calidad y buen trabajo en guitarra. La voz de Elisabeth se entiende claramente como la de una mujer (la cual no es el caso en un monton de otras bandas death metaleras con cantantes mujeres, las cuales no podes reconocer si es un hombre o una mujer!). Son tambien muy activistas en la escena y trabajan para el fanzine “Hellhound”. Pero en el 2001 se mudaron al norte y planean grabar un disco!
